Recent clashes between Barcelona and Real Madrid have been less about football and more about nasty accusations, red cards and minor violence.
However, on Sunday Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo came together and returned football rivalry to its proper place, on the pitch.
While the game did have potential distractions, such as Pepe calling Andres Iniesta a flopper and the Catalan separatists calling for independence, Messi and Ronaldo’s performance swept all of it aside.
Adding to the excitement was the chase for the Ballon D’Or award with the shortlist being announced at the end of the month.
After the game Messi said that “it would have been better to win, but they have a great play (in Ronaldo). It was an evenly matched game.”
Over the last few seasons Messi and Ronaldo have both been shattering records and destroying their oppositions’ defences.
Last campaign Messi scored a European club record of 73 goals and a Spanish league record of 50 goals, Ronaldo was just behind him with 46 league goals.
The two player’s performance in last week’s match was one of the best displays of football the sport has ever seen.
The two players’ goals truly demonstrated why they are considered the best in the world.
